Delaware Hospice welcomes new Regional Medical Director to meet community needs in Kent and Sussex Counties

Stephen Schlesinger, M.D., has joined the medical staff of Delaware Hospice as a Regional Medical Director with responsibilities for Kent and Sussex Counties.
As Regional Medical Director, Dr. Schlesinger will provide medical expertise to Delaware Hospice’s care teams and will consult and collaborate with attending physicians. He will assume the role of attending physician for those patients with no attending physician, and, when necessary, he will visit patients and their families when attending physicians are unable to do so. He will conduct educational seminars to health care professionals to gain a better understanding of hospice care, thus assuring that hospice services are accessible to patients and families.
Dr. Schlesinger earned his Medical Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and holds a B.A. from Columbia University. He served the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital during his Internship and Residency and completed a two-year fellowship at the University of Virginia’s Department of Child Psychiatry in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Dr. Schlesinger has practiced for more than 25 years as a Pediatrician in Dover. He is a staff member of Bayhealth Medical Center, Kent Campus, and has served on many hospital and state committees.
As Chairman of the Pediatrics Department of Bayhealth Medical Center for five years, Dr. Schlesinger directed the design of the new pediatric ward and developed the first Child Life Program in southern Delaware.
He has been active in community outreach activities, teaching classes for prospective nurse practitioners, nursing students and parents, working with the Pre-school Diagnostic Center and Wesley College Career Advisory Committee, running a pediatric clinic for Native American children, and providing care for migrant workers through Delmarva Rural Ministries. Dr. Schlesinger has been a member of several committees, including the State School Health Advisory Committee, Delaware Review Organization, and Mental Health Task Force.
