Delaware Hospice nurse, Rima Johnson, R.N., was presented with a City Council Resolution on January 17, 2008, in recognition of her actions at an apartment fire on October 22, 2007.   The award was presented by Fire Chief Willie J. Patrick with Director of Public Safety, James N. Mosley, and Deputy Chief of Operations, Joseph F. Kalinowski, also attending the ceremony.

The fire occurred in a first floor apartment of a seven-story building, occupied by a 66 year old female who was confined to a wheelchair.  The occupant was seated and sleeping in the wheelchair at the time of the incident, when Delaware Hospice nurse, Rima Johnson, arrived for a visit.  Johnson found a free burning fire on the bed mattress beside the patient.  She quickly retrieved an ABC fire extinguisher from within the apartment, extinguished the fire, and removed the occupant from the apartment.

Fire Chief Patrick stated that “The actions taken by Johnson during this incident are commendable.  Her actions averted a significant fire loss and prevented a fire fatality.”

Cindy Boyer, Associate Director of Homecare Services, said, “It came as no surprise to us, Rima’s Delaware Hospice colleagues, that she was able to act so quickly to put out the fire and ensure our patient’s safety.  She brings that level of commitment and compassion to work every day.  We are honored and privileged to have Rima on the Delaware Hospice team.”
