Milford AARP officers (left to right front row) George Brewington, Joan Spurio, Doris Hoover, Connie Howell, Florence Atkinson, and Marty Brereton hosted Delaware Hospice representatives (back row left to right) Peggy Dolby, Assistant Director of Development and Jessica Collins, Community Education Coordinator at their February monthly lunch meeting.

Jessica Collins’ presentation about Delaware Hospice to the Milford AARP February luncheon meeting began with a quiz.  Members answered true or false to questions such as:  “Delaware Hospice is only for people with cancer.” (False)  “Delaware Hospice is only for people who are dying.” (False)  “You never receive a bill from Delaware Hospice for services, regardless of whether you have insurance.” (True).  “You must be a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) patient while in Delaware Hospice care.” (False).  And more.

Jessica then discussed some unique programs of Delaware Hospice, including its 13-month adult bereavement program; New Hope Program for children who have lost loved ones and its 4-day summer camp; and the Transitions Program, which provides assistance to individuals who are seriously ill but not appropriate for hospice care.

She emphasized that as a not-for-profit organization, Delaware Hospice depends on fundraising events as well as volunteer support to be able to offer its programs and services without charge to the community.

Peggy Dolby, Assistant Director of Development, spoke to the group about the new Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, opening in April 2008.   She said, “The steel and concrete foundation has evolved into an elegant and beautiful place.  The dream has become a reality!”

The Delaware Hospice Center will offer specialized hospice care for those who require short-term stays for symptom management.  Our expert staff will provide care 24 hours a day while family members spend quality time with their loved ones.  Sixteen private patient/family suites will become a comfortable, peaceful home away from home for the family to gather.  Caregivers, inexperienced with the more thorough and intimate care needed, will receive education and guidance.  A family kitchen, reflection room, children’s alcove, family support center, and community resource area will further meet the needs of the entire family.

Jessica and Peggy encouraged anyone interested in learning more about Delaware Hospice, volunteering for the organization, or contributing to the capital campaign for the Center to call 1-800-838-9800
